What are The 3 Essential Jackets for Your Wardrobe

Updated: Nov 18, 2020

As some of us around the world enter the cooler months and others enter into warmer months, I thought this would be the perfect time to let you in on the know for the Three Essential Jackets you should have in your wardrobe.

  1. The Denim Jacket

  2. The Leather Jacket

  3. The Blazer

Trends come and go, but these three pieces are here for the long-haul and ought to marked as an essential styling piece for any woman (or man for that matter).

The Denim Jacket

The epicentre of cool and casual for both men and women. Levi Strauss surely couldn’t have known he was creating such an iconic piece of clothing back in 1880, but we surely all owe him a thanks!

Some notes on the Denim Jacket:

  • AKA The Jean Jacket

  • A layering piece with the ability to lift your outfit from bland to chic in an instant

  • Great for breezy Summer nights when your warmer jackets are just too warm

  • Make it your own by personalising it with pins, patches, emblems - uniquely yours!

  • Pick a style that shapes your shoulders

  • Shades of blue will always be timeless and versatile; mid-wash blue is the classic colour choice

  • This gem always has a story to go with it - invest in a quality jacket the perfect fit for you so you can share those stories years down the track

  • Wearing with a dress or a high-waist skirt? Opt for a cropped version to help define the waist

  • Want to wear your denim jacket on the even cooler days? A trending style is layering it over a hoodie - both comfy and fashionable

The Leather Jacket

What started as a military item back in the early 1900's is now a must-have wardrobe item. It's your favourite piece to add a bit of grunge, street or 'bad-boy' (or girl) to your look. Bonus, it's just effortlessly classic and easy to style with.

Some notes on The Leather Jacket:

  • Timeless and universally flattering

  • Adds the perfect amount of edge to your look

  • Versatile for so many occasions; first dates, evening events, from day to night

  • Leather gets better as it ages, if taken care of properly

  • The more you break in your leather jacket, the more at home and comfortable it will feel

  • Due to the classic design, this item is easy to match with just about anything

  • Expect to pay more for a high-quality piece, but it will, and I promise you, be a smart investment. It will last you and you will love it for many years to come

  • Just like the denim jacket, you can personalise this one and make it your own. Personally, I love them just as they are (but I am a classic gal...)

The Blazer Jacket

There aren't many items that have been able to stand the test of time in the fashion world and we really have the one and only Coco Chanel to thank for bringing suits in to the women's realm of fashionably acceptable, way back in the early 1900's. Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel drew much inspiration from men's fashion and alas came the women's suit that journalists were barely impressed by (whaaa?!).

Only fairly recently in the scheme of things has the blazer itself been welcomed in to the casual wardrobe. Aren't we all happy about that?!

Some notes on The Blazer:

  • The ultimate fashion marking of adulthood

  • Adds a touch of class to any look, even when worn casually

  • From office to bar, lunch with the girls to date night, the blazer will get you there

  • Go on and try to pair it with anything you like! Roll or push up the sleeves to the elbows for an ultra casual-chic look or keep it to the wrists for sophistication

  • Want to feel like a boss? It's extremely hard not to when you wear a tailored single-breasted blazer

  • A linen blazer is the perfect Summer layering piece

  • The shoulder seams should end on your natural shoulder

  • A bit bustier? Generally an open blazer (no closure) is the best option for you

  • Double-breasted blazers are a statement in their own-right, but be careful how you style because they tend to add bulk. Try a single breasted blazer if this is a concern

While writing this post I found myself getting very passionate about the transformation of women's suits and the empowering feeling that they give. So much so that I think I will have to do a post specifically on that. Who would be interested in seeing a little timeline of that?
