Styling your Inverted Triangle (IT) Body Shape

This body shape is often associated with an ‘athletic build’ and can be easily confused with an apple body shape. However, the difference lies is that ‘apple’ or ‘round’ shapes tend to carry more in the mid-section (this does not necessarily mean there is a weight issue! But that can wait for that body shape post). ⁣


Features of an IT Body Shape

  • Your hips are noticeably more narrow than your shoulders

  • You may not have a very defined waist

  • You likely have nicely shaped legs and a straight ribcage

  • High-neck tops probably aren't something you wear

  • Your backside is likely on the flatter side (not always though)

  • You likely have an athletic build and the stomach/upper body is usually where you would first see weight gain



General Tips and Guidelines

  • Go for clean-cut tops and dramatise the bottom

  • Try going for minimalist / simple necklaces and earrings. Save the real statements for your bracelets and rings. However, if you do want statement earrings, go for a ‘drop’ style 

  • Wearing wide belts will create the illusion of having more of a waist

  • Footwear with ankle straps, ankle boots, chunky heels

  • Wear handbags that hang at your hip or thigh

  • A-line and fit-and-flare dresses suit you well

  • Wear eye-catching shoes


Patterns

  • Large prints (bottoms)

  • Busy prints - checkered (bottoms)

  • Vertical seams (top) 

  • Vertical stripes up top to lead the eye down. Go for a solid or bold bottom or an even louder than the top bottom


Swimwear

  • Solid darker colour top and patterned bottoms for bikinis is a nice option

  • Anything with a belt detail will assist in balancing out proportions 

  • Halter tops

  • Tie-side bottoms help emphasise the hips

  • High cut bottoms

  • Your shape can handle side cut-out details in one-pieces


Tops

  • Wrap tops that flare from the waist to the hips to balance proportions

  • V-necklines

  • Deep scooping necklines (softer than a v-neck)

  • Jackets with hip pockets (not chest pockets) and/or single buttoned blazers

  • Peplum tops

  • Balloon sleeves, but make sure your shoulders aren’t emphasised by any puff


Bottoms

  • Go for volume to help balance the proportions by adding width to the hips

  • Embellishments or detail at the hips

  • Make bottoms your statement piece of clothing (rather than tops). If you want to wear patterns, this is where to use them

  • Wide-leg pants that skim right over the hips and past the legs. Remember to have them correctly hemmed 

  • Dropped waistlines on skirts 

  • Tiered bottoms

  • You can easily get away with wearing baggy bottoms because they add volume to your bottom half

  • Cropped pants/jeans work well because it attracts the eye down

  • Tulle skirts


Looks to Avoid

  • Drawing direct attention to your upper

  • Spaghetti strap tops 

  • Necklines that accentuate the shoulders (off-shoulder, boat necks, puff, shoulder pads (if you were ever planning on wearing those?), strapless). Although there are ways around this. Comment if you would like to know. 

  • Wearing statement earrings and necklaces will draw attention to your upper. If you’re feeling too much focus on the upper, try a less dramatic item of jewellery

  • Pencil skirts

  • Skinny jeans

  • Oversized blazers can add bulk to your upper
